Varicose veins
Definition
Varicose veins, are dilated, tortuous veins that often appear on the legs. They develop when the venous valves no longer function properly and the blood accumulates in the veins.
Causes for varicose veins
The development of varicose veins is often favored by a genetic predisposition, which means that they often occur more frequently in families. Weak connective tissue, which supports the veins, is also a major cause. Other factors that increase the risk of varicose veins include standing or sitting for long periods, which impedes the flow of blood in the legs. Being overweight also puts pressure on the veins, while hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause, can increase the likelihood of varicose veins.
Symptoms
Varicose veins are primarily characterized by clearly visible, tortuous and sometimes swollen veins on the legs. These veins are often bluish or dark in color and can increase in size over time. Those affected may also experience a feeling of heaviness or tension in the legs, especially after standing for long periods or at the end of the day. Pain, swelling of the ankles, itching and nocturnal calf cramps are also common. In advanced stages, the symptoms can worsen and skin changes, discoloration or even open ulcers (sores) can occur on the lower legs.
Treatment
The treatment of varicose veins depends on the extent of the disease and the individual needs of the patient. In mild cases, conservative measures such as wearing compression stockings, regular exercise and elevating the legs can help to alleviate symptoms. These measures improve blood flow and prevent further progression of the disease. For more pronounced varicose veins, minimally invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy, in which the affected vein is sclerosed, can be used. In severe cases, surgical removal of the affected veins may be necessary to permanently alleviate the symptoms and prevent further complications
Dangers of
non-treatment
If varicose veins are left untreated, they can lead to serious health problems over time. Insufficient blood circulation in the affected veins can lead to chronic venous insufficiency, in which the blood is no longer transported away properly. This can lead to skin changes such as discoloration, thickening and ultimately to painful, poorly healing ulcers (venous ulcers). There is also an increased risk of blood clots forming in the dilated veins, which can lead to thrombosis. A thrombosis can in turn cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism if the blood clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs. It is therefore important to treat varicose veins early to avoid these serious complications.
Prevention
To prevent varicose veins, it is important to take measures that promote blood flow in the legs and relieve pressure on the veins. Regular exercise, such as walking, cycling or swimming, strengthens the leg muscles and promotes blood circulation. It is advisable to avoid standing or sitting for long periods and to get up and move your legs regularly when sitting for long periods. Wearing compression stockings can also help to reduce the pressure in the veins and support the return flow of blood to the heart. A healthy diet and avoiding obesity also help to reduce the risk of varicose veins.
