Dialysis access

Definition

A dialysis access is a specially created access to the blood vessels required for hemodialysis - a vital treatment for patients with kidney failure. This access makes it possible to cleanse the blood regularly and effectively, as the kidneys can no longer perform this task. The most common types of dialysis accesses are arteriovenous fistulas, arteriovenous prostheses (shunts) and central venous catheters.

Symptoms

The need for dialysis access is usually indicated by the typical symptoms of advanced kidney failure. These include extreme tiredness, nausea, fluid retention in the body (edema), increased blood pressure and changes in urine production. These symptoms are signs that the kidneys are no longer fulfilling their cleansing function and dialysis is becoming unavoidable.

Prevention

To avoid the need for dialysis access, it is important to identify and treat the underlying causes of kidney failure at an early stage. This includes consistent control of risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes, a healthy diet, regular exercise and abstaining from smoking. Regular medical examinations help to detect kidney damage at an early stage and take appropriate measures.

Causes for dialysis access

Dialysis access becomes necessary when the kidneys are so severely damaged that they can no longer filter the blood sufficiently. The most common causes of kidney failure requiring dialysis are chronic kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and acute kidney damage. These diseases lead to permanent damage to kidney function, whereby the accumulation of waste products in the body can become life-threatening.

Dangers of
non-treatment

Without a functioning dialysis access, hemodialysis is not possible, which quickly leads to life-threatening conditions in patients with end-stage renal failure. The blood would not be sufficiently purified, leading to an accumulation of toxins. This can lead to serious complications such as cardiac arrhythmia, coma and ultimately death. It is therefore essential to have the dialysis access set up carefully and in good time.

Treatment options for dialysis access

The dialysis access is created in a surgical procedure. In the preferred method, the arteriovenous fistula, a connection is created between an artery and a vein, which then thickens and provides a stable access for dialysis. If a fistula cannot be created, an arteriovenous prosthesis or a central venous catheter is used. These accesses require careful monitoring and regular care to avoid complications such as infections or blockages.
